Meet Rashmi: An engineer with a big picture

 17 Jun 2022

Welcome to our Meet the Team series, where we look at the lives of various Planit team members from across the company. We caught up with Rashmi Chilkunda Somanna, an engineer with our Melbourne team since 2021, to find out about her experience and skills, her love of learning about new testing tools, and her various hobbies.

What is your career background?

I’ve worked as a product test engineer in automotive industry in India for more than five years, where I became proficient in manual and automated testing. Over the years, I have also gained experience in other types of testing such as unit, system, regression, and functional testing.

Working at Planit, I have added UAT and Integration testing to my skillset. I have also been exposed to different domains such as education and banking.

What are your key areas of expertise?

I have a good understanding and hands-on experience in different test design techniques, software development life cycles, and Agile testing. I also know well about the defect management process, and I know how to use different types of test case management tools.

What do you love about your job?

I like the new challenges that I come across every day in my work. It’s a fun and interesting way to deliver innovation, generate new ideas, and make sense of the big picture for a product.

What makes you great at your job?

I am flexible, a team player, and have experience with different cultures. I also knowledgeable about testing tools, and I am always learning about new tools and technologies.

What do you love about your team?

I can see a genuine spirit of cooperation and shared goals all revolving around helping each other, and as well as the customer.

What do you love about working for Planit?

There is a very positive organisational culture that makes you feel motivated and inspired at work. You get the feeling that Planit really cares about its employees as people, as well as their professional growth.

Another thing I like is how Planit gives you the choice to choose what area or skills to specialise in. If you want to try something new or build on what you already know, then there’s a wide range of testing and Agile training courses that we can study and be accredited in any time for free.

Another great thing is the open lines of communication between employees and management. Planit as a company also clearly communicates its goals and the steps it takes to achieve them.

What's your favourite challenge solved in the line of duty?

Once during my earlier days as a test engineer, I was asked by a client to explain the strengths and weaknesses of three different unit testing tools, which I didn’t know much about.

What was the solution and results?

I had to do some detailed research on all three tools, as well as several others, to understand and compare them. I was fortunate to receive some additional help from the senior engineers in my team, as well as the customer service teams from each of the tool companies. At the end of it, I was able to put together an informative document for the client which helped them decide which tool was best for their needs.

What have you been doing in your free time recently?

Apart from taking care of my infant daughter, I like to spend my time listen to music, do some painting, and read books.
