Industry Stats: Organisational View of Testing 2012

The benefits of testing are significant, as acknowledged by Index Respondents. As such, it comes as no surprise that the importance of testing in the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is widely recognised, with 74% of 2012 Index respondents registering a positive organisational view of testing. That includes almost 50% who consider testing as a critical element in producing reliable software. However, over a quarter of 2012 Index respondents still maintain a negative view of testing.

The 2012 Index represented a turn-around in organisational view of testing, registering a three year high in overall positivity and a six year low in the number of organisations who consider testing to be a low priority. This positivity was also reflected more tangibly in a long awaited increase in share of project budgets.

The Software Development and IT industry had a very positive opinion of software testing with 85% considering it either to be a critical element in producing reliable software or strategically important for organisation success. Lagging behind, however, was Government with just 65% reporting a positive organisational view of testing.
