The Test Maturity Model Integration (TMMi) is the only process optimisation option that provides a certificate of maturity. It aims to introduce a structured and controlled set of test processes, moving to a level of optimisation through increased rigour. The TMMi defines levels through which an organisation’s testing processes evolve from one that is ad-hoc and unmanaged, to one that is managed, defined, measured, and optimised. Some of the key areas assessed are test policy and strategy, peer reviews, product quality evaluation, and defect prevention.
The Test Process Optimisation (TPO) Assessment is an independent audit of current testing practice versus testing best practices. It provides recommendations for improvements to achieve greater productivity, cost efficiency and effectiveness. A ‘Mini TPO’ is also available, appropriate for small organisations or individual projects.
Key areas covered in a TPO include the strategic approach to testing, Lifecycle models and methodologies, Review existing test procedures and standards for testing, and Testware management. There are also test functions and training, test techniques both static and dynamic, metrics and reporting, and evaluate test tools to support the testing process.
The Agile Process Optimisation (APO) Assessment reviews a team or organisation’s current Agile process and procedures. It highlights areas of potential improvement and recommends steps to achieving these gains, focussed on team quality.
Key areas covered in an APO include but are not limited to the strategy and approach to Agile, planning at Release and Iteration level, team collaboration and interactions, and Existing Agile procedures and any standards/compliance requirements for the Agile team. There are also requirements gathering and grooming, existing Agile assets, regression testing, including automation capability, and non-functional testing, including the use of testing tools.
A less formal alternative to the TPO, the Health Check utilises a questionnaire that focusses solely on the testing team. This method is best suited to smaller organisations or those who do not require highly formalised reviews, allowing them to achieve and implement “quick wins”.
The Health Check process and activities are split into four distinct phases of initiation and preparation, interviews, review of test artefacts, and completion and reporting.

"I am very impressed with the TMMi Assessment conducted by Planit, as it lived up to my expectations in every regard. Now almost one year after the exercise, I can see how my test teams have implemented changes that have come directly from the report’s recommendations, each having made us more efficient and effective. I can clearly see the ROI from this investment and I look forward to a continued relationship with Planit.”
