Lisa Meier“I was initially drawn to Planit due to the offer of training, career development opportunities, and the ability to work with a variety of different clients and industries. Then there’s all the amazing people I get to work with on a daily basis, and I have been part of some fantastic teams consisting of talented testers, analysts, developers and business experts.”

Lisa Meier has a background in technology, customer service and the creative industries. Even so, it was her desire to find new ways to improve things for the better that attracted her to testing.

“Testing offers this for me in a structured way” she says. “I feel like a have an opportunity to improve the quality of a system that will in turn improve the experience for the end-user.”

After working in several government-related roles, Lisa found out about Planit and its testing services. “I was initially drawn to Planit due to the offer of training, career development opportunities, and the ability to work with a variety of different clients and industries,” she says.

After going through Planit’s rigorous screening and interview process, Lisa was recruited for the Brisbane office as a Tester. Having marked her first-year anniversary with the company, Lisa says the initially things that attracted her to the position still hold true today.

“Then there’s all the amazing people I get to work with on a daily basis, and I have been part of some fantastic teams consisting of talented testers, analysts, developers and business experts,” Lisa says. “That’s not to say I haven’t faced a lot of tricky challenges that required some creative problem solving, but overall, it has been a rewarding experience that has allowed me to constantly learn and grow as an IT professional.”

Switching into a pure testing role has required Lisa to skill up and get certified. Fortunately, like all Planit staff, she has full access to the company’s industry leading and highly regarded training programmes.

“The IT industry is constantly changing, with new technologies and processes,” Lisa says. “By constantly learning and training, I am equipped with skills that allow me to better approach and understand these new technologies, and how they can be tested.”

While the breadth of knowledge around technology and testing may be intimidating for some, Lisa sees it as opportunity for motivated individuals to become more effective in their job. “Gaining these new skills can also open up new opportunities to specialise in different testing areas or gain more responsibility in a current role,” she says.

Looking back at her year with Planit, Lisa’s advice for aspiring testers is to work on their communication and analytical skills, as she says these are crucial for a tester. An eye for detail will also go a long way.

“Always continue learning and challenge yourself to determine what you really want to do, and don’t give up until you get there,” Lisa says. “And when you get there, don’t forget the reasons that drove you there in the first place.”
