Meet Brylle: A brilliant test leader

 24 Sep 2021

Welcome to our Meet the Team series, where we look at the lives of various Planit team members from across the company. We caught up with Brylle, a consultant with our Melbourne team since 2017, to find out what he likes about testing, how he found his way to Planit, and his love of cooking.

How did you get started in testing?

I was a network engineer in my first job which led me to graduate with a degree in Electronics Engineering, but I soon started thinking of changing careers and tried testing. 11 years later and I am a test lead with certifications such as ISTQB Advanced Test Analyst and SAFe 4 Practitioner.

How has your career developed here?

My expertise is functional testing with skills such as test management, defect management, test design, and execution, as well as client relationship and stakeholder management. My secondary expertise is test automation.

Over the years I have gained experience with various tech platforms, such as SAP, Salesforce, and Workday, across a variety of domains, such as oil and gas, gambling, telco, and Infrastructure.

What do you love about testing?

I enjoy the process of finding defects, especially in doing some edge test cases, which is like finding a needle in a haystack, but the needle is a rare gem. Once you find this gem, it always feels like a great achievement.

What make you great at what you do?

A keen eye for detail and good organisation skills, as well as being able to think out of the box. One of the great lessons I’ve learned is that any ambiguity on requirements must be called out as early as possible, so it is important to cover all possible scenarios, as well as be creative and wear the user’s hat when designing scenarios.

What do you love about your team?

My current team is very diverse and supportive of each other. I feel that the diverse cultural background makes each of the team members more patient, understanding, and compassionate towards one another.

What do you love about Planit?

I love Planit for giving me an opportunity to upskill and grow my career by living and working in Australia. This has taken me outside my comfort zone, which has helped me develop both professionally and personally.

What's your favourite challenge solved in the line of duty?

At one client, I only had some documents and the test plan to get me started. It was originally estimated to need two testers and a test lead like myself, but I was only given one tester.

Dealing with project managers can also be tough, since they tend to focus on delivering on time and on budget, while the test lead wants to achieve quality and test coverage.

What was the solution and results?

In the first example, I had to juggle between being a lead and a tester for two different projects to deliver on time. When dealing with a project manager, my approach is to present the data, compare them with estimations and past projects and then exhaust all possible solutions, such as adding test resource to the project, doing overtime, and even myself doing the actual test execution.

What have you been doing in your free time recently?

I enjoy cooking, having a beer with friends, and traveling, though recently I’ve mainly spent my free time cooking. I’ve also been watching crime series on Netflix, like How to Get Away with Murder and La Casa de Papel, which is something I’ve enjoyed since childhood.
