Meet Michael: An engineer happy in what he’s doing

7 Oct 2021

Welcome to our Meet the Team series, where we look at the lives of various Planit team members from across the company. We caught up with Michael, an engineer with our Melbourne team since 2019, to find out what he likes about testing, the importance of teamwork, and his love of video games.

What do you love about testing?

What I like are the seemingly unlimited opportunities to improve yourself by simply being a “knowledge sponge” in everything we do. There are so many ways to develop our industry and platforms skills by having an open mind and soaking in the new knowledge.

How has your career developed here?

I've been in testing for about 15 years now. It’s through the mentorship and guidance of my peers and managers at Planit that I’ve had the chance to specialise in functional testing and test leadership.

What make you great at what you do?

I firmly believe that being happy in what you do will equate to good results, so surely my enjoyment of the job is clearly reflected in my work output! Having good interpersonal skills also goes a long way in this line of work.

What do you love about your team?

My team is a diverse one that is also accountable to each other. Working well with your colleagues doesn't end with the team’s deliverables – you also need a great working and non-working relationship with each member. Working well together not only makes your job a lot easier, but also the goals more achievable!

What do you love about Planit?

When I think of Planit, the words flexibility, opportunity, and stability immediately come to mind. This’s because of the great work culture and career development opportunities.

What's your favourite challenge solved in the line of duty?

It’s always a bit challenging when you find yourself in a young and inexperienced development team that doesn't have a formal, effective, and efficient testing structure in place.

What was the solution and results?

In a recent instance of this, I relied on my engineering experience to propose a new and effective testing structure based on good practices that suites the project's needs. The purpose of doing this was not to help the development team be more efficient, but also provide the business stakeholders a clearer view on our deliverables. The new testing structure was successfully implemented following the team's approval and we’re all working well together like the quality experts we are!

What have you been doing in your free time recently?

My free time recently has been split between video gaming and cooking. I used to do a lot of traveling, so I’m looking forward to the chance of doing it again very soon!
